I was with the 15th Leicester Troop out of Kirby Muxloe. We used to visit JLW on foot pulling a trek cart, 1956-9.
Despite rain and mosquitoes we always had a wonderful time – especially being able to use bracken to make sleeping more comfortable!
The 89th Edinburgh Troop stayed at John’s Lee Wood in summer 1957, coinciding with the Jamboree at Sutton Park – we went on a visit to the Jamboree, meet with the Edinburgh Scouts there – and the County Commissioner, who had been the first Scoutmaster of the 89th in 1923 when my dad started. We went on to Birmingham in the evening and saw Ralph Reader and his Gang Show.
I’m glad to know the campsite is still there and developing – there were very few buildings in 1957!
Some of us with others formed the Morningside District Rover Crew in 1960 – only to be disbanded after 1966 and the starting of Venture Scouts! However we still have an annual reunion, along with the Edinburgh Air Rangers, with whom we were teamed up in the early days of joint activities.
I’m pleased to say that the Bonaly Scouting Centre in Edinburgh has also developed over the years – I’ve been glad to put a little back into the movement myself, particularly when my elder son Jon was on the Service Team there and various electrical problems needed active resolution!
This last weekend Leicestershire Volunteer Police Cadets held our first ever local camp at John’s Lee Wood! The cadets and leaders had a brilliant time, and took part in lots of great activities, including the air rifle shooting, climbing and abseiling, and the on-site orienteering, which were all lots of fun. We stayed in the Gutteridge and Walker cabins, which were great for our needs! A big thanks to all of the wardens and activities leaders who were really helpful and friendly! Hopefully we will get to come back here in the future!
Thank you for a good weekend. It is just what some of the group needed at the moment. Sadly we had the funeral for one of our Scouts yesterday who had booked to be at JLW with us. He died after a collision with a car walking home from school on 15th January. His two adult cousins were with us at JLW as they are leaders in the group.
We used the rubber band alley and the caving experience on Saturday morning. Some also had a go with the orienteering course. We visited Bradgate Park on Saturday afternoon and the Leys Leisure Centre for swimming and the indoor climbing wall “The Tower” on Sunday morning. Everyone enjoyed the weekend.
Our Scout group travelled down from Nottingham for a four night stay at John Lee’s Wood and we had a terrific time. We made good use of all the great activities on site and we found the staff and facilities to be great. Definitely recommend.
Just back from another great visit to Johns Lee Wood..This time with my new Group Austrey and Warton and already planning our next visit.
The service team were ace. …as usual. Love Service Team D.
Keep up the amazing work you do guys…your brilliant and JLW is a very special place 🙂
We have just returned from our 3 day stay in the huts with 60 Year 4 pupils. They (and we!) absolutely loved every minute of our school residential. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity – we used the caving ,one boy said..’ that was the best experience of my life’!
We are so lucky to be able to use your beautiful woods- the children thought so too.
See you next year!
Just like to say a massive thank you to all your team, the cubs had a awesome time while at your site and also leaders did to 🙂
Hope to see you all again soon

Just wanted to thank you again for helping me out this weekend. Josh and I loved our time at John’s Lee Wood.
Can you please also pass on our thanks to the wardens who were great and gave us some good advice on the best spot for our shelter (the junior wardens were also a credit to the team, very welcoming and good fun too).
Thanks again and hope we will get out your away again in the future (with a bit more warning next time).
